Welcome to our Cardiology Department
You have been admitted for the assessment and treatment of your heart condition.
Our nurses will introduce themselves to you at the beginning of their shift and a doctor will see you daily.
Your doctor may recommend tests and procedures some of which are done outside of our department. You will be given a full explanation of these tests and procedures.
Once a diagnosis has been made, the Doctors will discuss treatment options with you and your family/whānau.
You may be attached to a heart monitor (Telemetry). This will be monitored at all times by a nurse in another area of our department.
After a heart event it is normal to feel anxious or worried. Your family may also be concerned about your health. This brochure has some information that can help you with these feelings.
If you have any questions or concerns please ask one of our staff.

Clinic Follow up
After you have been discharged from hospital
- you will receive a letter (via email or post) with the date and time of your clinic appointment.
- At your clinic visit, you will see a doctor or a nurse.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a choice, however we encourage you to take the opportunity to attend the classes if you have had a heart attack.
These are at no cost.
More information about cardiac rehab/ heart education can be found on WDHB Cardiac rehabilitation page.
Community Care
After your clinic follow up at the hospital, you will most likely be referred back to your GP for ongoing care and management of your heart condition.
It is important that you have a yearly health check with your GP who will review and assess your:
- current medications
- blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- heart rate and heart rhythm
- your cardiovascular risk factors
- psychological wellbeing
